Displacement Digester System, DDS™

Chemical and Pulping Limited's DDS™ cooking system is based on a previous displacement cooking system from the Beloit Corporation commercialized as the RDH Cooking System. CPL (Chemical and Pulping Limited) personnel have over 80 years of combined experience with displacement cooking systems. They have used this engineering design, field installation and project management experience to create and continuously enhance the DDS™ Cooking System.

The DDS has been successfully commercialized by CPL in 2003 with 42 projects sold to date comprising of 122 digesters worldwide. The pulping market increasingly recognizes the DDS's benefits as evidenced by continuously increasing project sales at both new and returning customers. Project Sales by decades are: 11 sold in the 2000s (10.6 dig/yr), 16 sold in the 2010s (5.7 dig/yr) and to date, 15 sold in the 2020s (13.5 dig/yr). The DDS has four sales references that were designed to liberate alpha cellulose fiber (dissolving pulp) for rayon simply by choosing the software recipe as needed. The DDS team has extensive experience in both greenfield installations (45%) and retrofits. Other types of projects include DDS expansions and three competitor conversions. The DDS is continuously updated by CPL with the latest offering the seventh generation, DDS™ VII.

DDS™ concepts

Pulp and Paper division

In our Pulp and Paper division we offer:

01

Displacement Digester System (DDS™)

A displacement kraft batch digester cooking system for wood and bamboo furnish. The Displacement Digester System (DDS) provides for high energy savings, low kappa pulp (high bleach chemical savings) and high pulp strength. There are two configurations available (DDS Design P and DDS Design G) depending on the desired amount of steam savings required.

02

DDS Alpha™

The DDS has four sales references that were designed to liberate alpha cellulose fiber (dissolving pulp) for rayon simply by choosing the software recipe as needed. The DDS system for alpha dissolving pulp is called DDS Alpha.

03

Digester Steam Saver (DSS™)

A conventional kraft batch digester cooking system with decreased steam consumption for wood and bamboo. This Digester Steam Saver (DSS) system saves substantial energy with low investment, but does not offer the chemical benefits of a displacement digester system (DDS) since it is designed for energy savings only and does not reuse the spent liquor to recycle residual chemicals. There are two configurations: DSS Type R and DSS Type D.

DDS™ performance

Displacement Digester Offers Higher Cooking Performance

Heating Efficiency. The DDS system pumps liquor through the bed of chips in the digester. The digester and its contents start at ambient temperatures. Liquor is pumped through the digester to increase the temperature of the contents until it reaches close to the cooking temperature. The two phases of liquor pumping are referred to as the initial cook and the middle cook operations. If needed, steam is added to the digester after the middle cook operation. The digester then continues to cook until the target kappa number is reached.

Increased Strength. The liquors used in the initial cook and middle cook operations have reaction chemicals and enough heat energy to delignify the wood or bamboo furnish, despite not being at the final cooking temperature. This activity removes up to 50% of the lignin in the furnish before the digester enters the time-at-temperature cooking phase. Therefore, the final removal of lignin at the higher cooking temperature can occur with a lower alkali concentration. The lower alkali concentration at the high cooking temperature does significantly less damage to the fiber compared to conventional cooking. This is one of the reasons that the DDS system will produce higher strength fiber at the same kappa number or similar strength fiber at much lower kappa numbers compared to conventional cooking.

  • Energy Efficiency - uses less energy
  • High Strength Fiber at Low Kappa Numbers
  • Decrease in the required bleaching chemicals and subsequent effluent pollution
  • Can use simultaneous mixed furnish, including bamboo
  • Vapor system is a 'Closed System'
